Our beloved Temple website Sri Satyanarayana Swamy Temple (cvhts.org) and my website Velandy Manohar, MD: Fostering Recovery By Increasing Understanding of Mental Illness | Haddam, CT (velandymanoharmd.com) has many related posts. My Book is largely focused on our Sacred Temple and inspired by our work to plan and build the temple to serve our community over the past few decades. I am forever grateful that I was blesssed with the privilege of serving in various roles in this process beyond being a supplicant, a parttime priest and devotee who offered worship with my friends and neighbors..
I’m a son, a brother, husband, father and grandfather, an accessible neighbor, a Physician, seeker, a lifelong learner, and above all a servant of my community.
Sadhana Path
My experiences along my chosen paths over 8 decades.
Aldous Huxley: Experience is not what happens to you; it's what you do with what happens to you.
George Eliot: “Our Deeds determine us as much as we determine our deeds.” It is never too late to be what you might have been.”
Epictetus: “ It is not what happens to you but how you react to it that matters.
Lao Tzu: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”
My fascination with and immersion into the deep, penetrating, entrancing insights of Adi Sankara Acharya Bhagavata of Kaladi, Kerala from abut age 10 got me started along my chosen path. I patiently trudge on seeking his mercy and guidance.” I offer a translation of Sanskrit Sloka that continues to nourish and sustain me on my journey.
1: The Root of Meditation is the Form of the Guru, 2: The Root of Worship is the Feet of the Guru,
3: The Root of Mantra is the Word of the Guru,4: The Root of Liberation is the Grace of the Guru. Dhyana Mulam Gurur Murti - In sanskrit with meaning (greenmesg.org).
There are two examples how humility and grace can enhance our chances of achieving our objectives while trudging on the Sadhana Path while being mindful of how we are carrying out our responsibilities to our family and community around us in some of the most difficult circumstances where everything you hold dear is on the line :
a. The first example is the encounter of Arjuna with the key figures of the Kaurava Klan in a battle to protect the Kingdom ruled by King Viraat where the Pandava brothers and Draupadi had taken refuge under disguise for the fourteen year of their exile. When Arjuna entered the battlefield he first shot arrows just below the feet of Bhishma Pitamah and Guru Drona to pay Obeisance and announce his presence in front of them. In ensuing fight notwithstanding their best efforts, the Kaurava clan was defeated. Thus, even when the chips are down, and his elders and teachers were among the sworn enemy’s side he did what he thought was his duty to protect the Matsya Kingdom that had protected his family but only after seeking the blessings of his Guru and Patriarch. This link provides Virata Parva - Wikipedia
b. On the eve of the Kurukshetra War both Arjuna and Duryodhana visited Lord Sri Krishna in Dwarka to ask for his assistance. As an Emperor Duryodhana sat near the head of the bed while Arjuna sat humbly the Lord Sri Krishna’s feet patiently waiting for Lord Sri Krishna to open his eyes. Lord Sri Krishna gave them the choices that were on the table a. The Narayani Army or b. Lord Sri Krishna alone functioning as a Charioteer. Arjuna chose Lord Sri Krishna to be his charioteer with folded hands and provided his explanation to his Lord and Teacher. This choice of course lead the enunciation of the Srimad Bhagvad Gita on the Dharma Kshetra which in turn resulted in the mental, spiritual and physical transformation of Arjuna who lead his Pandava Klan to a victory. The overarching dictum that influences human behavior and the outcomes of decisions is Dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ” Dharma protects those who protect it. This is displayed on a wall in the Sree Satyanarayana Swamy Temple. This phrase is part of a profound precept that is found in the Manusmriti [8:15 and in the Mahabharata: the complete teaching is, “ those who destroy Dharma will be destroyed by it [in time] Those who protect Dharma, Dharma protects them that is why I don’t abandon the right dharma. Adhering diligently to this teaching has empowered us to determine, plan address the changing needs of the many different communities of devotees who have found a spiritual home while managing a variety of challenges from the time we began working on our Temple over 4 decades ago. Srimad Bhagvad Gita. Fifth and Sixth discourse.
In the sixth Discourse which is called Atma Samyama Yoga or the Yoga of Self-restraint. Atma here connotes the mind Individual self-educates us on all the means, mainly meditation {Dhyanam} by which we can shed our weaknesses, and affirmatively grow ourselves into a fulfilling life of virtue and deep commitment to service of others. This Sixth discourse especially and the Fifth called the Yoga of True Renunciation several precepts inculcated by Lord Sri Krishna for the benefit of those on the Sadhana Path to address very important questions proffered by Arjuna who was being helped directly by Lord Sri Krishna to make a tremendous almost super human transformation from transmitting from state of despondency he was immersed in the middle of the Dharma Kshetra at end of Discourse I. to surrender and transcendence in the 18th discourse
There are several verses in Chapter V that were most helpful to me. E.g., V 1.The brilliant question by Arjuna on a fundamental conundrum about choices facing every individual and a definitive response from Lord Sri Krishna to begin major lessons on the choices we face and have to make our way to our goal on our Sadhana Path. In Verse 15 The blessed lord says “knowledge is enveloped by Ignorance-thereby beings are deluded. In 16 The blessed lord says: But to those whose ignorance is destroyed by the knowledge of the Self, like the Sun , to them Knowledge reveals the supreme Brahman.
In Discourse VI, V44 The Blessed Lord, By that very former practice he is borne on in spite of himself. Even he who merely wishes to know Yoga goes beyond the finite fruits of worshipping OM- Sabda Brahman . Dramatic transitions can occur with God grace if the devotee practices the steadfastness and practice of self-control. The most remarkable example is Maha Rishi Valmiki was able to transform himself from being a Dacoit Chief into a determined seeker and attained the great honor of becoming the creator of the SLOKA and produced the immortal narrative Lord Rama and Mother Seetha Lakshmi. He became the First great poet in sanskrit and of an Epic poem the Ramayana. Finally, in Discourse VI, V 47 Lord Sri Krishna indicates who is most devout among seekers. “Among all Yogis , he who is full of faith, with his inner self merged in Me, worships Me, he is, according to Me, the most devout.
I will be glad to share the information about the verses in Discourse V and VI that were most helpful to me during my Journey. Everyone has to make their personal choices which can vary as it did for me through the past seven decades. .
Dramatic transitions can occur with God grace if the devotee practices the steadfastness, austerity and practice of self-control. The most remarkable example is Maha Rishi Valmiki who was able to transform himself from being a Dacoit Chief into a determined seeker and attained the great honor of becoming the creator of the SLOKA and produced the immortal narrative Lord Rama and Mother Seetha Lakshmi. He became the First great poet in sanskrit and of an Epic poem the Ramayana. Finally, in V47 Lord Sri Krishna indicates who is most devout among seekers. “Among all Yogis , he who is full of faith, with his inner self merged in Me, worships Me, he is, according to Me, the most devout.
Another sterling example is King Mahabali of Kerala. He was great devotee of Lord Maha Vishnu. He was the grandson of Bhakta Prahalad an unflinching devotee of Lord Maha Vishnu. They are both from a lineage of demonic people. As soon as King Mahabali realised the small person [Vamana Avatara] who had requested a boon from him was Lord Trivikrama who needed one more site for his third final step of the boon to be fulfilled, after spanning the whole universe, the King offered his own head for the placement of God’s lotus feet. Lord Maha Vishnu was so impressed by the generosity and devotion of the King who had earned the Title by courage and character as Maha Bali Chakravarthy- King of Kings that he gave him a boon because he loved his people, and they felt the same towards him that he could visit them and be with them once a Year. This period is celebrated as Onam, a grand festival that everybody participates in regardless of caste, religion language, culture, gender or age or social status. I learned early on in my life from these well-known stories and later on from the Nirvana Shatakam, and Maneesha Panchakam of Adi Sankara Acharya Bhagavata that regardless of our lineage God grace can help us individually to transform our lives and perhaps lend a hand to help others get started to assist them on their path to transcendence. Here are some examples.
- Facebook Chinmaya Vibhooti April 11, 2017
Once Lord Rama asked Lord Hanuman, "what is your relationship with me?" and Lord Hanuman answered, "with reference to your body, I am Your servant; as an individual soul, I am part of You as You are the whole; but as the Self we both are one. This is my firm conviction." There is a more comprehensive exposition of this concept in the epilogue of Nirvana Shatakam of Adi Sankara Acharya Bhagvata. “Oh Lord ! In the form of body, I am your servant. In the form of life, O three-eyed one, I am part of yourself. In the form of soul, you are within me and in every other soul. I have arrived at this conclusion through my intellect and on the authority of the various scriptures.
There is no other more nobler and inspiring ideal of wisdom, service, devotion and humility than Lord Hanuman. He was also skillful diplomat, ferocious warrior and humble devotee, par excellence
This is another spiritually informed paradigm of the transformation of created beings from being despondent creatures made of common elements: tattvas, gunas, koshas to transcendental beings while we are still a living and breathing mortal. Lord Anjaneyar is an exemplar of this singular transformation. I offer this image that follows that will forever in my mind in my journey towards, liberation and transcendence and keep my spirits up and boost my energy when I am weary now and then to sustain me on my journey to my last breath..
Lord Hanuman meets with Lord Rama during the latter’s 14-year exile. With his brother Lord Lakshmana, Lord Rama is searching for Mother Sita Lakshmi who had been abducted by King Ravana. Their search brings them to the vicinity of the mountain Rishyamukha,
Having seen Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana, Sugriva sends Lord Anjaneyar to ascertain their identities. He approaches the two brothers in the guise of a “Brahmin.” His first words to them are such that Lord Rama says to Lord Lakshmana that none could speak the way “the Brahmin” did unless he or she had mastered the Vedas. When Lord Rama introduces himself, the Brahmin identifies himself as Hanuman and falls prostrate before Rama, who embraces him warmly. {the Image from the illustration is very moving and inspiring]..Lord Anjaneyar’s Sadhana Path began in real earnest on the Kishkinda Mountain.
This is an image as a mere mortal, that will remain forever in my mind in my journey towards, liberation and transcendence and keep my spirits up and boost my energy when I am weary now and then to sustain me on my journey to my last breath.
This embrace of a mere mortal by the 7th Avatar of Lord Maha Vushnu is also an image I bring to mind when I chant the Narayana Upanishad [Krishna Yajur Veda] and reflect on this extraordinarily magnanimous Blessing bestowed on mere mortals who strive and chant and meditate from the fifth verse. This is actually repeated twice in the text. “Narayana Saayujiam Avapnoti” “Ya Evam Veda”. The devote obtains unification or merging with Narayana. This is secret teaching of the Veda. This profoundly moving image of a mortal being fondly embraced by God Himself is the closest exemplar of Saayujiam that happened in life for any person that I have ever witnessed in my studies or during my prayers. This Upanishad with verses that references the four Vedas also sustains me mightily besides the 5 verses of the Maneesha Panchakam and 6 verses of the Nirvana Shatakam. [Composed By Adi Sankara acharya Bhagvata]

He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God? The Sadhana Path that can provide the opportunities to transition from Vishad [despondency] to Sat Chit Ananda State. This process and trials and tribulations in life while trudging this path is described in this Book- By Bapu, in the story of the transformative upadeśa of Maharishi Agastyar bestowed on Lord Sri Rama in the text of the Aditya Hrudayam Stotram on the field of Battle while waiting for his final combat with Ravana. In the Mahabharata, the responses of the mighty warrior Arjuna in the middle to battlefield which caused him to be grief stricken and despondent and his response to the Gita Upadeśa which appears to have become transformed as he achieves insights after becoming a Sharanagati on the battlefield At the end of the XVIII discourse Arjuna moved forward to accept his responsibilities and offer his actions and fruits of his actions to Lord Sri Krishna [Samarpanam]. These are first and last-eighth steps of the journey on the Sadhana Path.

Part 1.03 INTRODUCTION TO THE SYMBOLISM AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ICONOGRAPHY OF THE DEITIES ENSHRINED IN THE TEMPLE- Velandy Manohar, MD
This vital Journey from the state of Despondency (Vishad) accrued from a subjective feeling of inadequacy and pessimism engendered by avidya to the Sat Chit Ananda state of Moksha involves eight doable steps that have emerged from the Spiritual wisdom of Pujya Shree Bhupendra Bhai Pandya. These are Sharanagati, Jnana yoga, Karma yoga, Yagna, Dhyanam, Bhakti yoga, Sannyasa and Samarpanam. In order to step up from Vishad of day-to-day life we have to practice and reach the second stage of sharanagati . Sharanagati denotes a devotee who is seeking shelter. It is essential for the devotee to choose and take refuge in Dharma by surrendering everything and dedicating every act to Gods feet in the role of a sharanagati. I highlighted this by humbly welcoming Lord Sri Krishna into my heart and trusting in Him that he will deign to accept me as a sharanagati by terms used in the title of the essay. .
Bapu concluded after his several experiments with Truth that it is possible for every person to attain that blessed and indescribable state in which he feels the presence of God within. However, he cautions us about the nature of this journey and offers his insight on how he decided to meet the challenges with faith. He said, “I know the path, it is straight and narrow. It is sharp as a razor. I rejoice to walk on it. When I slip, I weep.” But Bapu had placed his unshakeable faith in God; he believed that God has assured us that he who strives never perishes. “I have implicit faith in this promise he said. Therefore, though I may fall from my weakness a thousand times, I will not lose my faith in Him.”
There are two well-known scenarios that exemplify this journey of the soul and inner consciousness. From Vishad to Liberation – Swaraj even if the person has not physically move down a specific path or on time scale.

Maharishi Agastyar’s Aditya Hrudayam.
Everything that is around us in the universe is within us as well. That’s how every atom is connected. That’s how the influence of Planets work on us through gravity. For example, you may understand the influence of Moon on earth with tides. Now, Within us the Sun god is none other than our SOUL . Even in Astrology Sun signifies Soul. So chanting Aditya Hrudayam, you are strengthening your Soul and will power in difficult circumstance. Soul in turn will become charged up and will guide your mind to act in a pattern that gives you an extra strength and will power and similarly it gives you an aura that attracts positive energy and success. That’s what happened to Sri Rama during the war with Ravana. Sri Rama almost lost the war, and he wanted extra support to win the enemy. That’s the time Agastya Maharishi helped Sri Rama by giving him Aditya Hrudayam and asking him to chant trice and face the war., After Rama chanting this he had got back his will power and energy to win over. Anybody can chant Aditya Hrudayam. The benefits may be innumerable, but what i experienced is that it gave strong will power to overcome difficult circumstances in my life, and with a victory. Remember , before you chant Aditya Hrudayam, you need to worship Maharishi Agastya, seeking his permission and blessings to get the best benefit out of Aditya Hrudayam. Earlier in the beginning of his exile Lord Sri Rama had paid Obeisance to Agastyar Maharishi – described in the Aranya Khanda. This meeting with Lod Sri Rama is at the Battlefield before his epic struggle to vanquish Ravana.
Verses 1,2, ,3. Describes the despondency of Lord Sri Rama. Verses 28, 29, 30 and 31 describes the miraculous transformation of Lord Sri Ram’s state of mind and commitment to achieve his Goals and set out to eliminate Ravana.
Verse 1. When the war was nearing the end, Rama was in a fatigued position. Ravana was daring for a fresh encounter as he appeared to be exalted.
Verse 2 At the entrance of the battlefield, Sage Agastya visited Lord Rama, saw His exhausted state, and told him the way of attainment as thus:
Verse 3: Lord Ramaa, mighty-armed, I will tell you about the eternal secret by which you can defeat your enemies and win in the battlefield.
Sage Agastya, before going back, said thus to Lord Rama as a blessing: Oh Rama, the strong shouldered, from this moment, you will surely win Ravana.
Verse 28 After Hearing Sage Agastya, Lord Rama got rid of all his worries and sorrows. Reinforcement and fortification came to Lord Rama like a stream.
Verse 29: Lord Rama recited the sloka gazing at Lord Surya ardently. He felt felicitated. Purifying himself with sipping water thrice, he took his bow bravely.
Ravanam prekshya hrishtatma yuddhaya samupagamat |
sarvayatnena mahata- vadhe tasya dhrito’bhavat || 30 ||
Verse 30: On sighting Ravana in the battlefield, Lord Rama approached him with a strong intent to kill him.
Verse 31:: Delighted on contemplating Lord Rama in the battlefield, Lord Surya then knew that destruction of Ravana was imminent. He then directed Lord Rama towards this end.

The second dramatic example is the Mahabharata. In the middle of Kurukshetra, which is described as a Dharma Kshetra sitting in his Chariot with Lord Sri Krishna as his Sarathy after surveying the battlefield, Arjuna is consumed with sadness and despondency
In Discourse I, Verse 46 the despondent, grief-stricken Arjuna says, “It would be better for me, if the sons of Dhritarashtra, with arms in hand should slay me , while I am unarmed and unresisting in the battle
In Discourse I, Verse 47, Sanjaya said: “having said thus, Arjuna, sorrow- stricken in mind cast aside his bow and arrows in midst of battle and sat down on the seat in the Chariot.
In Discourse II, Sanjay said, To him who was thus overcome with pity and afflicted and whose eyes were full of tears and agitated, the destroyer of Madu [Demon] spoke as follows: Lord Sri Krishna accepted this great sorrow of conscientious warrior and spoke to him gently and inculcated him into the knowledge about the process of accepting responsibility to do what was his ordained duty. After a dialectic discussion that emphasized that Self Knowledge alone is the cause of Bliss, in the format of an Upanishad Lord Sri Krishna asked his pupil Arjuna in Discourse XVIII, Verse 72, Has it been heard by thee, O! Partha with an attentive mind?. Has the delusion of ignorance been destroyed, O Dhananjaya?
In the Mahabharata, the responses of the mighty warrior Arjuna in the middle to battlefield which caused him to be grief stricken and despondent and his response to the Gita Upadeśa which appears to have become transformed as achieves insights after he became a Sharanagati on the battlefield that helped to move forward to accept his responsibilities and offer his actions and fruits of his actions to Lord Sri Krishna [Samarpanam]. These are first and last-eighth steps of the journey on the Sadhana Path
I offer these prayers which have helped many millions of people over ages this from Sri Rama Sankeerthanam.
Lines 85 and 86:

Om ! Asato Ma Sadgamaya, Tamaso Ma Jyotir gamaya, Mrtyor ma Amritam gamaya, Shanti X3
The mantra invokes a concept of transcendental reality! The prayer is for a total rise from this involved, insufficient conditioned ‘being’ to the absolutely independent unconditioned ‘being’ which is simultaneously ”Sat, Jyotir, and Amritam, Existence, Light, Enlightenment, consciousness, Omniscience and immortality! ”The Upanishad wants every human being to attain immortality by realizing himself and feel that he is the very BRAHMAN himself! It is prayer to attain the Sat Chit Ananda state at the end of the journey on the Sadhana Path from Vishad [Despondency] to Self -Realization.

Kurai Ondrum Illai Song With Lyrics | Krishna Tamil Devotional Song | Rajshri Soul | MS Subbulakshmi - YouTube This You Tube presentation has English Lyrics of the song.
This Tamil song composed by Former Governor General of India Mr. C. Rajagopalachari and sung with great insight and devotion by Bharat Ratna {the Jewel Of India} M. S. Subbulakshmi because both the Lyrics and her rendition are able to convey the divinely inspired content even if you don’t understand the individual Tamil words. I have made some changes in the translation of Mr. P.R. Ramachander in this link http://translationsofsomesongsofcarnticmusic.blogspot.com/2010/04/kurai-onrum-illai.htm
I have made these modifications [these are in Italics] based on meditations while listening to the words, the manner in which Amma [as MS was referred to] renders the concepts and my memories of visiting Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. In addition, while writing about the Moorthies in the CT Valley Hindu Temple I was inspired to write about Tirumalai Balaji. To my great amazement when I sent a selection of essays to the TTD I was sent an acknowledgement and check for the essays from TTD in 2001 because some of my essays including special essay about Tirumala Balaji in Saptagiri from the editor. A picture of the framed documents will be in Appendix of my forthcoming book. These are some specific excerpts from this devotional praise of Lord Sri Krishna:
