ARC Health Promotion Response to Food and Nutrition Service

Agency: Food and Nutrition Service (FNS)
Document Type: Non rulemaking
Title: Meetings: 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee
Document ID: FNS-2020-0015-0001

Comment:
Dear partners in the engagement, education and empowerment efforts the Food and Nutrition Service is pursuing while encouraging people to offer comments. I want to share this teaching from Hindu Scripture: Let noble thoughts come from all directions. I have been promoting the concept of food can heal and can hurt like any prescribed or over the counter medication. To make this point graphically I draw a grocery cart and draw arrows into the cat and out of the cart to a heart and write my prescription given to every person on medications what goes into your Cart can surely hurt your Heart.
To start with I oppose this recommendation: The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee scientific report recommends up to three servings of dairy, but also says to avoid saturated fat to lower heart disease risk. Dairy products, as the report notes, are the leading source of saturated fat.
This is a sound rationale for my bold assertion:

Scientific evidence also shows that milk and other dairy products increase the risk of asthma, breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers, cognitive decline, and early death, and offer little if any protection for bone health. In 2018, the American Medical Association passed a resolution recognizing that lactose intolerance is common among many Americans and recommending that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans indicate that meat and dairy products are optional.

Plant-based diets rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans provide plentiful calcium, potassium, and magnesium. The natural source of vitamin D is sunlight, and fortified cereals, grains, bread, orange juice, and plant milks are dietary options.

I urge you to make it clear in the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans that dairy is unnecessary.

Next I would like to share the gist of my Treatment Recommendation with respect health and well-being: Health Promoting Recommendations
Synopsis*

The best results will follow if these four are part of the following five components of a long-term approach to achieve and maintain good health. [SENSS]:
1.Specific food stuffs in the proportions cited in My Plate.Gov and
2.Yogurt with the six healthful bacteria
3.Turmeric with Bioperine
4.Plant Stanols and Sterols

S: Social connections with people who provide warm wafting wind beneath your wings. [a: below] This is an essential part of health promoting recovery sustaining recommendations
E: Exercise: three types/ options: stretching, strengthening, walking running, swimming. Total time minimum 150 minutes a week
N: Nutrition: Consider adopting the diet from My Plate.Gov plus the Yogurt with the six healthy bacteria. Turmeric. Plant Stanols and Sterols
S: Stress management: Deep breathing, Yoga, Meditation, Metta - Loving Kindness prayer, Tai Chi etc.
S: Self- Care/Self -Compassion can be experienced by adopting and practicing various Buddhist chants, and meditations from other faith traditions besides your own, massage, healthy Sleep hygiene while eschewing smoking Tobacco, Alcohol, other drugs of abuse.

There are two additional Items:
1.  Twelve Step-based or fellowship focused recovery is integral to the successful restoration of health, wellbeing and function
2.  Psycho-pharmaceutical and Med Assisted Treatment can accrue transformative changes that can add value to the lives of our         patients and their families.
Are there tangible benefits accruing incrementally over time?

There are three areas in which Tangible benefits can be potentially accrued over time 7-8 months to 2 years:
1.  Reduction of Levels of Inflammatory Cytokines
2.  Increase of Neurotropic factors such as BDNF that can evoke regeneration of new Nerve cells and enhance Neuro-plasticity
3.  Reverse the adverse effects of Life style including risky health behaviors, poor sleep hygiene and proinflammatory cytokines on the Epigenetic age of the genome. If this approach can succeed in reducing the discrepancy between the chronological age and the epigenetic age to less than 5 years, it can add years to life.

Thus, recovery and growth can add life to years. Furthermore, the restoration of Telomere length and Telomerase levels and restoring equivalence or better of the Epigenetic age versus the Chronological age can increase the likelihood that the genetic codes transmitted to the next generation will be healthier at the end of this health promoting life style.

*
Two detailed document- listing and describing specific treatment recommendations to alleviate suffering, promote recovery, infuse self-compassion and build resilience are available. 1. Treatment recommendations for patients and staff in general and Treatment recommendations for persons diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorders. In addition, I have great illustrations and 2 graphs on the underlying mechanisms that can improve health and longevity or cause disease and disability. Velandy Manohar, MD, Medical Dir.
